ChatGPT says something wrong about my business. How do I fix it?

There is no form where you can ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini to edit what they say about you. What you can do is find the public page the mistake comes from and fix that, because search-grounded assistants rewrite their answers from what they find each time.

Record the mistake properly

  1. 01Copy the exact wording, the date, the app and whether web search was on.
  2. 02Ask the same question again in a fresh chat to see whether the error repeats or was a one-off.
  3. 03If the answer shows sources, open them and find the one that contains the wrong detail.
  4. 04If there are no sources, ask the assistant where the information came from. Treat its reply with care: it may not know, and it can guess.

Fix it where it lives

  • Your own website: old addresses in the footer, a forgotten contact page, an outdated PDF menu or price list still online.
  • Listings: Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Yelp and the directories in your industry. Update them and remove duplicates.
  • Data aggregators and lead-gen sites that copy listings. Many have a claim or correction process.
  • Articles and old press: ask the publisher politely for a correction or an update note if a fact is wrong.
  • Social profiles with old details in the bio.

Tell the assistant, too

Most assistants have a feedback control on each answer, often a thumbs-down with a comment box. Use it with a short factual note. It is not a direct edit and nothing guarantees a change, but it costs little.

If the wrong information is harmful, for example a false claim about your business, check the provider’s published process for reporting it. For anything with legal weight, talk to a lawyer rather than relying on feedback buttons.

Re-check on a schedule

Corrections show up only after the corrected pages are crawled again and the assistant retrieves them, and answers drawn from training data can lag much longer. Re-run the same questions every week or two and note when the error stops appearing.

Questions

Can I remove my business from ChatGPT?

Not in a simple way. You can limit what is publicly available about you and control crawler access to your own site, but other public pages about your business remain readable. For personal data, check the provider’s privacy request options.

The assistant invents a service I never offered. Why?

Sometimes a page lumps you in with other businesses, and sometimes the model fills a gap with a plausible guess. Saying clearly on your own site what you do, and what you do not, gives it better material.
