Just opened? How a new local business can get into AI answers

A new dental practice, law office or plumbing company starts with almost nothing for an AI assistant to read: no reviews, few listings, no local coverage. Assistants also update on their own schedule. That is normal. The useful work in the first months is making sure that when the public web does catch up, it says the right things.

What to set up first

  1. 01A website with a clear homepage (what you do, where, for whom), one page per main service, and a contact page with address or service area, phone and hours.
  2. 02Your Google Business Profile, Apple Maps and Bing Places listings, verified and complete, with the same details as the site.
  3. 03The two or three directories customers in your trade actually use, plus any licensing or professional listings you need anyway.
  4. 04Structured data (schema.org) with your business type, address or areaServed, phone and hours.
  5. 05A simple way to ask every customer for a review after the job, without incentives or scripts.

What takes time

Reviews, mentions on local sites and links from other businesses build gradually, and search indexes and AI models pick up changes at their own pace. Some answers come from a model’s built-in knowledge, which may be months older than your business. Expect “I couldn’t find information about that business” for a while when you ask about yourself by name; it means the public record is thin, not that something is broken.

Honest ways to add public information

  • Join your local chamber of commerce or trade association if it is useful to you anyway; member directories are public pages.
  • Write short articles answering questions customers really ask you.
  • Tell local community sites or newsletters about your opening if they cover such news.
  • Partner with nearby businesses you genuinely work with and mention each other where it makes sense.

What to avoid

Buying reviews, creating fake listings, copying a competitor’s content or paying anyone who promises a guaranteed AI recommendation. These can get listings removed and none of them is something an outsider controls.

Set a baseline now

Run the free scan in your first weeks and save the result, even if you are not named. Re-run the same questions every month or two to see when the assistants start finding and describing you.

Questions

How long until ChatGPT knows about my new business?

Nobody can give a reliable date. Assistants that search the web can find new pages once they are indexed; answers from built-in knowledge lag further behind. Keep your public information complete and check periodically.

Is it worth checking AI answers before I have reviews?

Yes, as a baseline. It shows which competitors are named and which sources the assistants use in your area, which tells you where to get listed first.

Check what AI says about your business

The free scan asks five customer-style questions with live web search and shows every reply word for word, who was named, and which pages were cited. About a minute, no card.
